One of its many top-quality cookware items is the Carbon Steel 35.5-inch Paella Pan. This pan is loved by its users and considered best for cooking paella for large parties.

This World Cuisine paella pan can cook all types of paella dishes. It’s made from heavy-gauge polished carbon steel that makes the pan highly durable. But as it’s a thin metal pan, it can get hot very quickly. However, it won’t cause any trouble for the users. The hammered base of the pan helps it to expand when heated and prevents buckling.

If you want to make your paella with a crispy socarrat rice crust, then this pan is perfect. Its shallow dimpled bottom makes sure that all the liquid evaporates in little time and you get an authentic Spanish paella.

The low sides of the paella pan distribute just the right amount of heat for slow cooking. And its sturdy dual zinc handles allow you to carry the paella pan easily from one place to another. Moreover, this highly versatile pan can be used on any stove-top, under the grill, and also in the oven.

One great quality of the material of this pan that caught my attention is that along with being attractive, it’s highly scratch-resistant. So the users can be sure it will last for lifetime. Thus, this product offers great value at such a reasonable price.

Carbon steel is the most popular material for paella pans. Some of the users of this carbon steel pan also feel that it enhances the flavour of the paella. This is one of the many reasons why carbon steel pans are loved by paella devotees.

Although this pan is highly durable and almost maintenance free, it can still rust like any other raw steel pan. Therefore, make sure you wash it properly after using it and dry it right after. 4. Sertodo Alicante 18″: Best Copper Paella Pan

If you’re someone who loves beautiful cookware, then you won’t be disappointed after investing in this beautiful copper paella pan. This artisan paella pan by Sertodo Alicante is made from highest quality heavy-gauge hammered copper. Its solid construction makes it highly durable and strong. Also, the copper used in this pan is obtained from recycled materials which makes it an eco-friendly option.

One of the many things I love about this paella pan is its interior. It has a conventional hot-tinned interior which rewards you with an enhanced cooking experience. It distributes the heat evenly throughout the pan and ensures that your food gets cooked properly. Although both the exterior and interior of the pan are made from recycled materials, no lead is present in the copper or in the tin.

This gorgeous pan with a subtle shine also adds an antique charm to your kitchen space. This pan is also a great option for serving and will leave your guests delighted. It has medium size with 15-inches diameter and 2-inch depth. It can easily feed up to 6-8 members depending on the quantity you load in it.

5. Garcima 16″: Best Enameled Steel Paella Pan

This traditionally designed Garcima enameled steel pan is my top choice in the category of enameled paella pans. It comes with a concave base and horizontal handles. This paella pan has 16-inch diameter and can easily feed up to 4-6 people. Having a weight of 1.45 kg, this pan is also a but heavier as compared to carbon steel pans.

The pan is primarily designed for making paella. However, you can cook many other dishes in it as well. You can use it on you stove, grill, gas burner, and even on open fire. It is also safe for kitchen oven and wood-fired oven.

But, as this pan has a concave bottom, it may not be a good idea to use it on electric, ceramic, or induction cook-tops. If you use this pan over any of these cook-tops, the heat loss will be much more significant.

Lastly, this pan is very easy to clean and does not require a lot of maintenance. So if you prefer easy to maintain pans and find seasoning a bit annoying, then this paella pan is perfect for you.

Note that all enameled steel pans have a higher chance of mechanical damages as compared to carbon steel pans. Enamel is a fragile material; therefore, you must handle this pan with care. Also, using metal cooking spoons in this pan is not recommended as it may scratch its interior.

Pros
  • Easy to use
  • Highly versatile

  • Concave base

How to Buy the Best Paella Pan?

Size of the Paella Pan

Paella pans are available in different sizes ranging from 8’’ diameter up to 60’’ diameter. You can choose the right size according to your family size or the quantity of meals you cook.

  • The ideal size of a paella pan for a home with 3-6 members is 15-inch or 16-inch.
  • If you have a bigger family or prefer calling friends over for paella, then the right pan size for you is 18-inch or 20-inch. This size is big enough for serving 7-12 people.
  • If you’re planning a paella party for 13-25 people, then you need a huge paella pan (preferably with a gas burner). In this case, the ideal paella pan size for you is 24-inch to 28-inch.

In each size of this pan, you can cook small to large quantity of paella. But, if you want your paella to cook properly then make sure the later of the rice is not thicker than half of an inch. In this way, the caramelized crust of rice gets evenly browned and your paella gets cooked just right.

Material of the Paella Pan

No matter how you cook your paella or what ingredients you use, your final product will depend on the material of the pan you use. Paella pans are made from different materials: carbon steel, enameled steel, stainless steel, copper, and cast iron. The most popular materials among these are stainless steel, carbon steel, and of course, copper.

Let’s have a quick look at each of the paella pan materials:

Carbon Steel

A paella pan made from carbon steel is the classic design paella pan that is usually used by Spanish home cooks and professional chefs. Carbon steel is the most popular material for paella pans because of its even heat distribution, high cooking performance, and naturally non-stick surface.

Also, some high-quality carbon steel pans come with a dimpled surface. This not only creates a unique texture but also allows quick evaporation of liquid so you can get that crunchy socarrat rice crust.

The only downside of this carbon steel pans is that they require some maintenance. And as carbon steel is a reactive metal, it may rust if you don’t take care of it.

Enameled Steel Paella Pans

While carbon steel pans are the most popular amongst all, enameled steel paella pans are also considered a good choice. These pans have a black & white speckled enamel coating. Enameled steel is a great choice for making paella pans as it’s highly durable and increases pan’s longevity.

The non-stick enameled surface of the pan protects it from rusting and also delivers excellent heat distribution. Although this material can turn black over the years, but it does not affect the pan’s cooking performance. The only downside of enameled steel pans is that the enamel can chip off if you drop the pan. So it’s important to handle it with care.

Stainless Steel Paella Pans

Stainless steel is one of the top material choices for cookware and kitchen tools. Stainless steel is known for its rigidity and strength, and thus considered one of the best materials for paella pans. The stainless steel paella pans are quite similar to carbon steel pans as they’re highly resistant to rusting. Also, these pans require relatively low maintenance.

Stainless steel paella pans are sturdy and rigid, and provide excellent cooking performance. Due to their sturdiness they can easily hold heavy ingredients. Also, these pans have a very attractive appearance due to their polished silver finish.

The downside of these pans is that they’re not naturally non-stick. Also, unlike carbon steel pans, they do not develop a patina. However, they’re very effective at distributing heat evenly throughout the pan.

Copper Paella Pans

Copper pans bring back the old-world charm of cookware. This is one of the main reasons why this material is loved by many. These pans can easily become a showpiece at your dining table and in your kitchen. Copper gives a shiny allure to the pan’s surface and brings that timeless and classic quality to all your dishes. In addition to their stunning exterior, copper pans also have excellent heat distribution properties.

You don’t have to worry about copper trickling into your meals as the interior of the pan is usually made from stainless steel or have a tinned lead-free surface. The downside of these pans is that they require a lot of maintenance. Also, these pans are not dishwasher safe so you have to wash them by hand.

Cast Iron Paella Pans

Cast iron is a suitable material for cookware including paella pans.  However, cast iron pans require extra care when being used on a glass stovetop. It is because cast iron is a very heavy material and may break the glass if dropped.

Cast iron paella pans come with excellent heat distribution properties. However, their heat retention capability is not an advantage when cooking paella. It is because too much heat can overcook the dish. Since these pans retain heat for a longer time, they must be removed from the stove a few minutes before the dish is completely cooked.

Also, paella pans are sometimes used for serving purposes as well. Therefore, cast iron might not be the best material for their construction due to its heavy weight.

Heating Source

Gas stove top

All the paella pans work on a gas stove top.

Ceramic, electric or induction stove top

For these stove top, you’ll need a paella pan that has a flat base. A flat base will increase heat conduction and help you cook your paella thoroughly. Paella pans that are made for gas cooking or outdoor cooking come with a rounded bottom. Therefore, these pans don’t work well on ceramic, electric, or induction stove tops.

Additionally, for induction stove tops, you’ll have to use on the following induction paella pans:

  • A carbon steel paella pan with a flat base
  • An enameled steel paella pan with a flat bottom that is declared safe for an induction stove top by the manufacturer
  • A stainless steel paella pan that comes with a magnetic plate built into its bottom specifically for an induction stove top

Kit/burner

If you’re planning to cook paella for large gatherings, then look for a large outdoor paella pan with a burner or a paella tripod kit. This kit includes a burner, stand and paella pan, and use a standard outdoor gas grill propane tank. You’ll need to buy a hose from your hardware shop to connect this tank to the burner.
